Introduction: Through the combined works of research, local communities and professionals, a new activity has been created, "vénériculture", i.e. clam farming. Thanks to the knowledge acquired in research as well as production in the shellfish field, clam production results followed shortly thereafter. Rightly so, only 10 years have elapsed since the beginning of the research and the actual production phase (500 t) involving about 300 professionals. Research conducted by IFREMER positively contributes to the creation of new trades as well as diversity within existing professions. Clams are marketed nationally as well as exported. French producers are truly competent, but the prospect of open borders and increasing competition requires maintaining a high... |

This study recounts the policies on fishing fleet renewal in France from 1945 to 1983. The views held by sector professionals and the public authorities on the role of fleet renewal in fisheries economy are put into context in terms of stock abundance, access to fishing grounds, the state of the market, etc. The consequences of the lack of consistent guidelines for distributing the resources between competing fleets, foreign or national, are presented. The limits of the stances held on technical "progress" and "reasonable" management of resources are discussed. Other, complementary lines of research to undertake are proposed as a conclusion. Many tables and figures illustrate the text. |

A national program started in 1989 to drive researches on Ruditapes philippinarum brown ring disease correlated with a vibrio called P1. The researches have concerned epidemiological surveys on spats and adults, treatment methods, diagnostic techniques, and anatomical and functional studies about the vibrio-clam relations. The transmissions of the disease appeared mainly related to contaminated manila clam seeds, with secondary horizontal propagation. The brown ring formation appeared to be caused by a periostracum deterioration. Taking into account some of these results, an adapted cultural technique including special care of seeds and decreased densities was proposed to the farmers. |

The exploitation of amphihaline species by marine and freshwater commercial fishermen in the Loire estuary in 1989, and by marine commercial fishermen in the Adour estuary from 1985-1991 is described in this study. This fishery employs 320 fishermen and represents a commercial value of 38 million FF. This is mainly due to the exploitation of glass eel, especially in the Loire River, the landings of which have decreased alarmingly. In the Adour River, the diversity of the exploited species and the total commercial value of drift gillnet catches - on the average 43% - in this fishery are high. The landings of migratory salmonid species are high and they may attain 25% of the total commercial value. This study emphasizes the uniqueness, the socio-economic... |
